My First Triathlon: Camp Yuba Sprint 2015

Guys. A triathlon has been on my bucket list for as long as I can remember. I signed up for this sprint last year, but my car accident happened 2 weeks before the race, so this year was the year.

I wanted to test the waters with a sprint, and it was the perfect distance! 1/2 mile swim, 12.5 mile bike, and 3.1 mile run.

We camped down by lake Yuba the night before (so awesome!) and got a bright and early start. I set up my transition area and even got a spot at the end of the rack. People were so nice and encouraging, and I pretty much loved everything about it. They did consolidated age groups since it was a small race, and I got 4th place for women under 35! (technically I was the second woman 25-29, soooo I'll take it haha)

I had so much fun! I definitely learned a lot (don't start in the back of the pack on the swim, sit down to take my wetsuit off haha, go faster! :)) and I will definitely be doing more of these!

Whole30: Days 14-16 (where we cheated)

So, on Thursday we headed down to the always-wonderful St. George for a little anniversary getaway... and immediately realized how hard it was going to be to stick to the Whole30. I called ahead to several restaurants and determined that there would be very little we could actually eat (if anything at all). Depressing.

We tried to stick it out though, eating apples and almonds in the car, grabbing dinner at a Thai restaurant (after pestering the waiter... no sugar, no soy, no MSG, no gluten) and settling on curry: no brown sugar, no peas, no rice... basically curry soup. It was kind of disheartening, actually, since eating is one of our favorite parts of going on vacation.

The next morning, we woke up, and were pretty much dreading breakfast. Our hotel offered a big breakfast, but of course we couldn't eat any of it but the orange slices. We were gearing up to try and find a place that would cook us up some eggs and veggies in the right kind of oil, and we decided that we'd had enough. While we've loved what the program has done for us so far, it wasn't worth ruining our vacation over.

So, it was decided. We were going to skip these 3 days, eating at our favorite places down in St. George, and actually enjoy our vacation.
It was such a good decision.

We rode our bikes through Zion, we hung out at the pool, we enjoyed the scenery, and we ate amazing food. It was a great trip.

Now that we're back home again, we're going to pick up again with our diet tomorrow. We know it goes against the rules of the program, but we're just going to do what's best for us. I definitely don't regret it (we got to eat sooo many delicious things, and we didn't go too crazy), and I'm excited for the next two weeks of eating Whole30-approved foods again!

Terrible picture, but we got to eat at the Anasazi Steakhouse, where you cook your own meat/seafood on a hot stone!
Soooo worth cheating for.

Christmas!

How was your Christmas??

Ours was lovely. Down-time, family, movies (unimpressed by Into the Woods), presents, our own beautiful tree, and an all-around good time.

We had a seafood boil, got Christmas Eve jammies, and I got a festive manicure (among other things).

Love!

Our Peruvian Adventure!

Yay! I've finally started wading through the hundreds of pictures from our awesome trip last month! We seriously had the best time traveling around Peru, and my sweet husband even carried my luggage everywhere to save my back... no easy feat, let me tell you what.

A few highlights.

Lima. Amazing cathedrals with crazy-cool catacombs underneath! So huge and so beautiful!

The Amazon. A 3.5 hour boat ride up the River to our little bungalows. We saw SO much crazy wildlife! An ANACONDA, we caught and held that baby caiman (alligator thing), SLOTHS and monkeys.... we swam with dolphins and piranhas (which Kip also fished for, caught, and ate) in the freaking Amazon River (which looked more like a huge lake that went on forever)... and just had an amazing experience.

Cusco. One of the coolest cities I've ever seen. This was our hotel, such a great view of the city!

The Inca Trail and Machu Picchu. What can I even say. SO BEAUTIFUL. Probably the coolest places I've ever seen. Pictures could never do it justice, it was definitely the experience of a lifetime. Go there. Do it. Just be prepared for those nasty toilets (yep, that gross hole in the ground) and that insane elevation.

Overall, it was SUCH a great trip! I'll forever be thankful for getting to experience parts of that gorgeous country with my love!!

Be of Good Cheer

Be of good cheer. The Man of Galilee, the Creator, the Son of the Living God will not forget nor forsake those whose hearts are drawn to Him. I testify that the Man who suffered for mankind, who committed His life to healing the sick and comforting the disconsolate, is mindful of your sufferings, doubts, and heartaches.

“Then,” the world would ask, “why does He sleep when the tempest rages all around me? Why does He not still this storm, or why would He let me suffer?”
Your answer may be found in considering a butterfly. Wrapped tightly in its cocoon, the developing chrysalis must struggle with all its might to break its confinement. The butterfly might think, Why must I suffer so? Why cannot I simply, in the twinkling of an eye, become a butterfly?

Such thoughts would be contrary to the Creator’s design. The struggle to break out of the cocoon develops the butterfly so it can fly. Without that adversity, the butterfly would never have the strength to achieve its destiny. It would never develop the strength to become something extraordinary.
-Joseph Wirthlin

Loving this today. Sometimes it's hard to see past our current struggles, but we just need to remember that everything we go through is for our good and that we'll be strengthened by it in the long run.

Wintry Drinks Full of Magic

Magic, I'm telling you. MAGIC.

For the non-coffee-drinker, it can seem like your Starbucks choices are limited to their not-delicious hot chocolate or their extremely-delicious Caramel Apple Spice. But what's a person to do when the winter rubs itself in your face and you neeeeeed something warm and drinkable?

You order this.

(note that my name is not, in fact, kylie)

It's a modified version of one of those off-the-menu Butterbeer drinks. It doesn't taste like Butterbeer, but it still tastes like magic (just not the kind they have at the Wizarding World of Harry Potter). It's a tall whole milk steamer with 2 pumps of caramel, 2 pumps of toffee nut, and 2 pumps of cinnamon dolce. Top the whole thing with whipped cream and caramel, and you've got yourself some reeeaaallllyyy delicious obesity problems. Do it.

If leaving your home in the snow just seems like too much to bear, stock up on this stuff.

Pumpkin Spice hot chocolate from the Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory. Need I say more?

Happy drinking!

December of service!

So last Christmas we started this tradition where we do an act of service (outside of what we would already do) each day leading up to Christmas. We weren't perfect at it, but we loved it!

We decided to keep it going this year, so once we got back from out trip, we started up the goal of at least one act of service per day... and it was AWESOME! We love this tradition --- it really helps us get into the Christmas spirit (and it probably keeps us grounded cause we really like getting presents for each other haha). From donations of money or goods to organizations like women's shelters to watching our neighbors' kids to volunteering at Blood Drives, we had an amazing experience. What a blessing, to be in the position to make the Christmas season a little better for someone else!

(our chart and a Christmas bag of donations)

It's our goal now to try and be mindful of those around us all year... after all, why limit this kind of happiness to the Christmas season?

A Few of My Favorite Things

You know how some things just make you really happy?

I have LOTS of those things. But these are some of my favorites:

This video about the minions in Despicable Me 2. And that movie in general.

Coconut. And all tropical deliciousness. This blog post is about different ways to add coconut to your diet. Yum.

These recreations of childhood photos. Hilarious. Genius. I think I want to do this picture:

The house we've built. It's almost done and we'll hopefully be in it next week!

(ps that picture is from like a week ago, even more progress has been made since then)

Beaches. The sand, the sun, the ocean... does it get much better?? I can't wait till our California trip in a few weeks, so until then, I'll have to rely on memories of Fiji.......

Waymarks on my spiritual quest

I am curently taking an advanced writing class at BYU called "Writing: Waymarks on the Spiritual Quest." It's a sweet class and we got to do a lot of cool and enlightening projects and activities. For our final, we are supposed to present to the class the progress we've made on our own spiritual and intellectual quests.

While pondering my spiritual quest (because, quite frankly, my intellectual quest is all over the place), there were a lot of seemingly unconnected ideas that kept running through my mind. Rather than let them remain in their state of chaos and distract me from accomplishing anything else, I decided to start writing what came to mind and see what happened.

First off, something I believe very strongly and see examples of daily – happiness is a choice. Our Father in Heaven loves us and wants us to be happy, and He has set up a glorious and perfect plan for us to do so. While He has laid out the framework, however, it is up to us to take advantage of that and do what is necessary.

Another thing I have a huge testimony of is free agency. We make our own choices and are made to endure the consequences of said choices – good or bad. They say blessings are brought to pass through others. President Kimball told us, “The Lord answers our prayers, but it is usually through another person that he meets our needs.” I think the same holds true with tribulation. One person’s personal tests in life result in another’s joy or heartbreak - depending on if the first person passes or fails. The example that comes to my mind is rape – it isn’t that God is punishing the victim, it’s that one person made a horrible choice and another person is made to suffer the consequences. While this may seem unfair, it is the only way that agency can work. In order to make good choices, there must be an option to make bad ones.

Next, the subject of service has been on my mind a lot lately. Every time I feel unproductive, unhappy, or frustrated with the way my life is going, I always seem to realize that, if I did more service, I would be happier. This logic is twofold – first, we are told that blessings come from service, and second, when we focus on others rather than ourselves, we always seem to find that we are more upbeat, have a better attitude and perspective, and feel better about ourselves. The result: service equals happiness.

After looking over the written manifestation of the workings of my brain, my initial thought was, “wow, back to square one, this is just a bunch of random concepts, not material for a presentation.” After a little more reflection, however, I began to see the connection – and the connection suddenly made perfect sense with the progress I have made this semester.

Here we go. Try to stay with me.

The Lord has given us all individual talents and abilities. Each of us has the ability to help people in different ways, and there are things we can do for others that no one else can do. Often we find that the ways in which Christ strengthened us are the ways in which we can help others. Based on our experiences, knowledge, natures, and blessings from the Lord, we are more sensitive and in-tune with those needs in other people, and we have the desire to do our part to fill that need.

It’s like a triangle, with “God”, “me/you,” and “others” as the vertices, with whatever our talent is filling in the center. Christ strengthens us in whatever area we need, and we, in turn, can help others in the same way.

I've been trying to fill my triangle with empathy. The Lord has been so kind, loving, and understanding to me throughout my life, especially in a few particularly memorable situations. Because of this, I feel like I have a heightened desire to relate and empathize with friends and acquaintances that are having a hard time. I have been blessed with the ability to recognize many problems that people are having and figure out subtle ways to provide assistance.

As I have recognized this extra sense that I seem to possess, my next step is to put this blessing into action. It is one thing to recognize a need but quite another to actually do something about it. However, where much is given, much is required, and I am starting to realize that, if I let this God-given talent go to waste, I will be rejecting Christ and what He has done to strengthen me in this area. It’s my job to uncover these talents and build upon them – asking the Lord for help, exerting effort, and putting them into practice.

I guess that’s the point, really. Christ helps us in ways that we don’t even recognize. But when we do recognize His hand in our lives, we learn from it and are grateful. That gratitude and newly acquired knowledge inspire us to improve ourselves and help others in the process. Because of the assistance that we are given, we are able to pass that assistance on to others… and the Lord’s love, empathy, and mercy are spread to all His children.
